The English gothic rock band Fields of the Nephilim formed in 1984. The band's name refers to a
Biblical race of giants or angel-human hybrids, known as the Nephilim. The band's seminal sound
has proved highly influential, especially in the genre of gothic rock.
‘Elizium’, their third studio album, was originally released in 1990. The album is considered to be
one of their best, consisting of a couple of lengthy pieces that showcase their ability to write
textured, loud pieces of rock that are still goth but at the same time transcend such artificial
limitations to create their own sound. The intro for the third song of the album, "At the Gates of
Silent Memory", features spoken lines by Aleister Crowley. The lines are excerpts from Crowley's
poem "At Sea", recorded in 1920.
