ENNIO MORRICONE, geboren am 10. November 1928 in Trastevere, Rom, ist einer der größten und erfolgreichsten Filmmusik-Komponisten und Dirigenten. Er hat auch unter den Pseudonymen Dan Savio und Leo Nichols gearbeitet und komponierte die Filmmusik von über 500 Filmen. Sein Name wird oft mit dem Filmgenre des Italo-Western in Verbindung gebracht; allerdings hat er nur für etwa 30 solcher Filme die Filmmusik geschrieben. MORRICONE studierte im Konservatorium von Santa Cecilia Trompete und Chormusik und lernte sein Handwerk unter Goffredo Petrassi. 1964 begann er seine erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit mit Sergio Leone und Bernardo Bertolucci. In dieser Zeit schrieb er unter anderem die Musik für Leones Filme "Für eine Handvoll Dollar", "Es war einmal in Amerika" und "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod". Seitdem komponierte er in jedem Jahr die Filmmusik für etwa 15 Filme. MORRICONE wurde bekannt, weil eine Reihe von Filmen, wie z. B. "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod", mit seiner Musik zu Kultfilmen wurden.

1987 und 2000 erhielt er den Golden Globe für die Filmmusiken zu "Mission" und "Die Legende vom Ozeanpianisten", ebenfalls 1987 den Grammy für "The Untouchables - Die Unbestechlichen".
Am 18. November 2003 wurde MORRICONE außerdem zum Ehrensenator der Musikhochschule München ernannt. Die Laudatio wurde von Enjott Schneider gehalten.

Dieses Jahr wurde ihm dann endlich die größte alle Filmtrophäen verliehen: am 25. Februar 2007 erhielt ENNIO MORRICONE den Ehren-Oscar Honorary Award für sein Lebenswerk, da er wie kaum ein anderer die Geschichte der Filmmelodien geprägt hatte, jedoch bei fünf früheren Oscarnominierungen stets leer ausgegangen war.
