In the mid fifties, Cecil Taylor formed his quartet originally with Steve Lacy on soprano, bassist Buell Neidlinger and drummer Dennis Charles. The group played at the Give Spot Cafe in 1956 for six weeks and performed at the Newport Jazz Festival (recorded by Verve) but despite occasional records, work was scarce. In 1960-61, Taylor recorded extensively for Candid as well as under Neidlinger's name by which point his quartet had involved to include the line up on this disc:
* Cecil Taylor (piano)
* Archie Shepp (tenor sax)
* Steve Lacy (soprano sax)
* Clark Terry (trumpet)
* Roswell Rudd (trombone)
* Buell Neidlinger (bass)
* Dennis Charles (drums).
This CD presents different takes of the title track, together with 'Davis' and Jumpin Punkins among others. It allows a fascinating insight into the inner of Cecil's burgeoning talent.
