Product Information
Oscar Simonsson and Magnus Zingmark make timeless, melodic, highly infectious jazz-pop with a 21st century twist, blending the finest ingredients of the past with today's best singers and musicians. Koop are based in Stockholm, but their musical magic carpet rides the trade winds from New York to Paris to Brazil, from Gene Krupa and Benny Goodman to contemporary acid jazz and classy Europop.
Between 1997 and 2007, Koop built their global reputation as the kings of swing, rebooting the coolest jazz sounds of yesterday using modern studio and sampling technology. Featuring the cream of their first three albums, Coup de Grâce is an expertly mixed cocktail of past, present and future.
Each of these albums was a chic and stylish statement in its own right. On all three, Oscar and Magnus worked with a glittering array of guest vocalists from inside and outside Scandinavia including Yukimi Nagano, Ane Brun, Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen and the legendary Earl Zinger. In between, they remixed a range of art-pop legends, including Yoko Ono and Astrud Gilberto.. Several Koop tracks have also appeared on film, television and advert soundtracks.
Starting in 1997 with Sons of Koop, Oscar and Magnus built their sophisticated signature sound from electronic collages of vintage jazz samples. The cult Swedish singer Stina Nordenstam was an early supporter, directing the video to Glömd, the first ever Koop composition and still one of the most futuristic, spooky and adventurous tracks on Coup de Grâce.
Oscar and Magnus continued using the same post-modern techniques, but their songwriting evolved to embrace more traditional jazz-pop compositions with broad crossover appeal to clubbers, DJs, and open-minded music fans alike. Released in 2002, Waltz For Koop was chosen as album of the year by listeners of Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 show. It spawned the Swedish hit single in Summer Sun, a gorgeous romantic reverie with vocals by Yukimi Nagano, and won a Grammy for Best Club / Dance Album.
The duo's third album, Koop Islands, sailed into view in 2007 like a magnificent ocean liner full of crisp new arrangements and a sunny, syncopated, almost tropical mood. Besides the achingly lovely Koop Island Blues, featuring Ane Brun, the album also contains the sassy and sexy Forces… Darling, on which Earl Zinger sounds like Rock Hudson serenading Doris Day in a Technicolor Manhattan, and Strange Love, a showcase for the sultry and seductive voice of Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen. There is even a "sequel" to Summer Sun, the light-headed carnival anthem I See A Different You, which is based around the same drum sample and again features Swedish percussionist Mattias Ståhl,
Coup de Grâce proves that Koop are still the sultans of swing with their suave, stylish, post-modern jazz-pop. An expert blend of happy and sad, bitter and sweet, fascinating rhythm and heartbreaking melody. Come on, treat yourself to a cocktail...
