Saturday night at Newport ’57 rocked with the awesome sound of the Dizzy Gillespie Band, who were gigging at the Festival for the first time. It was headline news that weekend, as Diz, the master showman, was also joined by special guest pianist Mary Lou Williams, who was returning to the stage after semi-retirement. The band included the then-fresh talents Benny Golson and Lee Morgan, forever boppin’ on this classic LP.
As Nat Hentoff wrote in his Down Beat magazine review, and repeated in the album’s original liner notes, “This is so enjoyable a band, because for one reason, it so enjoys being a band.”
