For many, the name Louis Armstrong now conjures up a jolly Santa Claus figure singing Hello Dolly before the throngs of admirers. For those who enjoy music in the true sense of the term, Armstrong is much more than that. He was the first great jazz soloist, and was responsible for the explosion of the genre taking it way beyond the frontiers of his homeland. For Dizzy Gillespie, Louis created the language of the jazz trumpet. Jean Cocteau saw him as the angel of Jericho and as for Philippe Soupault, his voice ‘unites heaven and hell, abolishing space and time’. Old Father Time has thankfully remained an accomplice, retaining his waxed souvenirs. Armstrong cut hundreds of records, from 1923 next to his master King Oliver until 1971, just a few months before his death. We have chosen the sides made by this inspired trumpeter and singer in 1928, which was considered as his richest vintage in master-pieces. This particular year found him surrounded by the choicest companions of his career, including the remarkable Zutty Singleton on the drums and Earl Hines on the piano, the creator who offered him more support and inspiration than anyone else. Louis was at the summit of his mastery, donating blinding improvisations to the century which were to astound the world, finding a perfect balance between popular and erudite music. As an example, Gunther Schuller wrote, “Louis’s West End Blues introduction consists of only two phrases. These two phrases alone almost summarize Louis’s entire style and his contribution to jazz language.”
Rezensionen
