Pianist, singer, composer, organist, band leader, entertainer and great epicurean, Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller spanned jazz so quickly (1904-1943) that the majority of his contemporaries didn’t have time to notice that behind his truculent image lay an immense artist, a prodigious pianist following the Harlem traditions of the twenties and thirties. However, his peers admired his supreme ease, his authority, the charm of his inventions, his imperturbable swing, his strength and his litheness. He cut most of his records at the head of his small set-up. Unequalled as an orchestra pianist, he gave grace to the most insignificant of songs by enhancing the lyrics with intelligence and irresistible humour, although he never boasted being a true singer. It is with pleasure that we may take this marvellous musician seriously, whose compositions belong to the most beautiful in the world of jazz.
