Der amerikanische Jazz-Klarinettist SYDNEY BECHET, geboren 1897, fiel erstmals auf, als er 1913 zusammen mit Louis Armstrong spielte. Es folgten Touren mit King Oliver, Clarence Williams und Keppard. Nach einem Abstecher nach Europa mit dem Syncopated Orchestra von Will Marion Cook, tourte er von

1921 bis 1923 mit der Sängerin BessieSmith. ErsteSchallplatten-Aufnahmen folgten, u. a. mit Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington und Clarence Williams. Ab 1925 ging er mit Josephine Baker auf eine mehrjährige Tournee nach Europa. 1939, Blue Note war gerade von Afred Lion gegründet, hat er seinen Hit, als er Gershwins Stück "Summertime" mit dem Meade Lewis Quartet für das neue Label aufnimmt. Dieses und Stücke wie "Sweet Georgia Brown", "All Of Me" oder "Saturday Night Blues" sind auf dieser wunderschönen Zusammenstellung zu hören und ehren BECHET als einen der großen Repräsentanten des frühen amerikanischen Jazz.
