Focusing on the blues more as a feeling than a form, Nina Simone finds points of intersection between the sacred and the secular on Pastel Blues, her fourth Philips LP. Utilizing a rich palette of moods and emotions Simone covers a broad range of songs: classics such as “Trouble in Mind” and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” a piano-and-vocal version of “Strange Fruit,” and the redemptive “Sinnerman” presented as an ascendant, gospelized chant.

Let It All Out, Nina Simone’s fifth release for Philips is, among other things, a personal homage to immortal jazz singer Billie Holiday. Interpreting the lyrics with her usual individuality and passion, Simone reinvents such Holiday classics as “This Year’s Kisses” and “Don’t Explain.” Simone also performs traditional blues, show tunes, and socially conscious folk numbers (Bob Dylan’s “Ballad of Hollis Brown.”)
