His given name is Louis Thomas Hardin. He was born in 1916, grew up amidst native Americans in Wyoming, and began his career as a Manhattan street musician during World War II. By the time he began recording for Prestige in the Fifties, Moondog had developed an underground following that is sustained to this day.
