While on tour in Japan in 1982 the legendary Kenny Barron agreed to record his performance at the IMO House in Tokyo for the enigmatic Japanese Businessman-turned-producer Masahiko Yuh. One of the latest recordings Yuh collected for his Why Not label and one of the few recorded in his native Japan this is an exceptional glimpse of Barron at the top of his game. Joined by the outstanding Buster Williams on bass and Ben Riley on drums the trio make their way through Monk’s “Rhythm-a-ning”, Churchill’s “Someday my Prince will Come” as well as Barron’s own “And Then Again” and the latin twinged track (a forte of Barron’s since his Gillespie days) “Manha Do Carnaval (Black Opheus)”. Even this hour long example of Barron’s skill is enough to blow away any listener.
