Friday night in Newport ’57 belonged to the All Stars. Coleman “Bean” Hawkins led a group featuring Roy Eldridge, Ray Bryant and Pete Brown, a long-missing veteran of the Thirties and Café Society. His ballad performance, according to Bill Simon’s original LP liner notes, “gave some idea of the timeless creativeness of this pioneer.”

Their artistry continues to inspire legions of jazz fans and players. Their set at Newport is finally on CD for the first time.
