Chesney Henry Baker Jr., besser bekannt als CHET BAKER, gilt als Inbegriff des West Coast Cool Jazz und als einer der wichtigsten Trompeter der Jazzgeschichte. Auch als Sänger, Komponist und später Flügelhornist sorgte er für Furore. Mit seinem Wechsel von Fantasy Records zu Pacific Jazz im Jahre 1953 begann sein kometenhafter Aufstieg zu einem wahren Superstar der damaligen Jazzszene, die ihn in eine Riege mit Stars wie Miles Davis, Clifford Brown oder Dizzy Gillespie katapultierte. Beinahe zur gleichen Zeit begann allerdings auch seine Heroinabhängigkeit, die ihn bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1988 begleitete.

Das nun vorliegende 3 CD umfassende Digi Pak-Set enthält insgesamt 50 Tracks aus seiner Zeit bei Pacific Jazz, also der Phase, die seinen mystischen Ruf begründete und ihn bereits zu Lebzeiten zur Legende machte. Natürlich sind alle großen Hits wie "My FunnyValentine", "Embraceable You", "Let's Get Lost", gepaart mit hervorragenden Liveaufnahmen und Aufnahmen mit dem Gerry Mulligan Quartet und dem Russ Freeman Quartet enthalten.
