Born in 1903 to disappear twenty-eight years later through too much living, Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke belongs to the handful of legendary artists who eternally left their indelible mark in the history of jazz. He who idolised Louis Armstrong was his opposite in a sense. Bix’ cornet sounded with a full and mellow matte finish. His style of playing flowed with poetry giving way to tremendous tenderness. Along with Frank Trumbauer, the specialist of the C-melody sax (nowadays cast aside) and the recognised inspiring force behind Lester Young, Bix cut a beautiful series of discs in 1927, providing a smooth and soft cool jazz well before its time, foreshadowing as well as contributing to the works of artists such as Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Paul Desmond and their Californian epigoni.
The best sides of this series are reunited here to be appreciated once more under the best possible conditions or perhaps to be discovered with pleasure.
