The year 1968 proved to be a great one for the incomparable Brasil ’66, the popular group led by the Brazilian pianist Sergio Mendes. Full of exuberant energy, impeccably performed, and flawlessly produced, Look Around features the talents of Jose Soares on percussion and vocals, Bob Matthews on bass and vocals, João Palma on drums, and Mendes on piano, along with the superbly paired vocals of Janis Hansen and Lani Hall.
In Look Around, Mendes drew on the stunning repertoire of Brazilian popular music outside the canon of the masterful Antonio Carlos Jobim — and he came up with a treasure trove. The album offers the gold of Gilberto Gil’s speed-of-light rhythmic "Roda"; João Donato’s witty "The Frog"; the alluring Carnival-time offering "Tristeza", by Harold Lobo; the great Dori Caymmi’s gorgeous ballad "Like a Lover"; and two lovely offerings by Mendes, "Look Around" and "So Many Stars".
In a departure from the Brazilian material, Mendes also cannily and successfully Brazilianizes the Beatles in "With a Little Help from My Friends". But it is the Burt Bacharach tune "The Look of Love" that became the smash hit from the album. Given a dramatic, sexy, and lavish backdrop of strings and a big-band setting by two newcomers — Dave Grusin on some tracks, and Dick Hazard on others — "The Look of Love" also benefits from Sergio Mendes’s laid-back bossa nova beat. A classic album for aficionados, Look Around is Brasil ’66 at the top of its form.
