Tide was originally released in 1970 as the sequel to Wave, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Claus Ogerman’s 1967 collaboration of beautifully orchestrated Brazilian ballad writing. Once again, most of the songs are Jobim originals — miniature tone poems by the twentieth century’s great Brazilian master of popular music.

Though the title track of the album bears close resemblance to "Wave" ("Tide" also evokes a love of the sea, and the song is built on the same chord changes), Tide is charmingly different as well. The album’s arranger, Eumir Deodato, paints with different brushstrokes than Claus Ogerman applied to Wave, which emphasized the more laid-back, somewhat melancholic side of Jobim. Deodato — who has since arranged for everyone from Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra to Earth, Wind & Fire and is best known for his hit version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra", the theme from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey — provides a jazzier energy, as well as a stunning new arrangement of Jobim’s most famous composition, "The Girl From Ipanema".
There is less guitar strumming by Jobim on Tide and more room for him to stretch out in his subtle, understated way on piano and electric piano. Powered by a solid rhythm section including Ron Carter on bass, the album at times turns into a tidal wave of Brazilian swing — including a high-energy showcase for Hermeto Pascoal’s flute on "Tema Jazz", and ample solo space for Joe Farrell’s bass flute and soprano saxophone and Jerry Dodgion’s alto saxophone. With its rhythmic sensibility nudging the music out of a purely bossa nova box, Tide is a must for aficionados of the timeless music of Jobim.
Original recordings produced by Creed Taylor. Recorded March 16; April 23, 24. and 29; May 8, 20, and 22, 1970 at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, Engineer. Arranged and conducted by Deodato. Joe Farrell appears through the courtesy of CTI Records.
