Product Information
Dianne Reeves wins the GRAMMY award in the Best Jazz Vocal Album (solo vocals & duos or groups with vocals) category for The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan. The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan is a celebration of Sarah Vaughan, The Divine One, by Dianne Reeves, a singer who shares many of Vaughan's gifts: a gleaming, pitch-perfect voice; a multi-octave range; a harmonic sense that takes her on some extraordinary flights of fancy; and a soulfulness that informs her every phrase. Also like Vaughan, Reeves has a fondness for crossing musical borders as if they didn't exist. The tracks on The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan not only resonate with Reeves, but also touch upon every phase of Vaughan's career, from Tadd Dameron's "If You Could See Me Now" recorded by Sassy in 1946 to "Obssession" featured on Vaughan's final album, the Sergio Mendes-produced Brazilian Romance released in 1987.
Also featured on The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan are tracks by George and Ira Gershwin and Stephen Sondheim. Produced by George Duke, The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan features a brilliant rhythm section of pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Reginald Veal, drummer Greg Hutchinson, guitarists Russell Malone and Romero Lubambo, who are surrounded by a 42-piece orchestra filled with L. A.'s top studio players, several of whom had backed Vaughan herself. All of them brought their mastery to the sumptuous, often daring arrangements of Billy Childs and Robert Freedman.
