Puschkin als Operette?Nein, mit Puschkins Erzählung »Pikawaja Dama« von 1834, die dann 50 Jahre später als »Pique Dame« im der Vertonung von Tschaikowski Operngeschichte schrieb, hat die 1864 uraufgeführte Operette gleichen Namens von Suppé fast nichts gemein. Außer, dass es auch hier um Spielkarten geht, immerhin hieß die – nicht sonderlich erfolgreiche – Urfassung des Schwanks »Die Kartenschlägerin«. Die Ouvertüre ist das Einzige, was vom Gesamtwerk überlebt hat. Sie ist eine der Meisterouvertüren Suppés. Umso interessanter ist es zu erfahren, was auf dieses musikalische Schwergewicht (was nichts mit der Leichtigkeit und dem mitreißenden Brio der Musik zu tun hat!) an weiterer Musik folgt. Es ist eine Mischung aus Italianità und Wiener Sentimentalität, die wir da hören: Das macht den großen Reiz dieser Entdeckung aus!

Pushkin as operetta?
No, Franz von Suppé’s operetta “Pique Dame”, which received its premiere in 1864, has practically nothing in common with Pushkin’s story “Pikawaja Dama” of 1834, which made operatic history 50 years later as “Pique Dame” set to music by Tchaikovsky. Except for the fact that both are about playing cards; after all, the – not very successful – original version of the farce was called “The Queen of Spades”. The overture is the only surviving part of the work. It is one of Suppé’s most masterly overtures. It is all the more interesting to discover the music that followed this musical heavyweight (nothing to do with the lightness and rousing brio of the music!). There are only nine numbers, but they show precisely the musical resources used by the still-young genre of Viennese operetta and how it absorbed all the music that had ever been heard in this city. With Suppé, this is mainly Italian opera: Donizetti and Verdi were at least godparents, as indeed was Schubert. And it is exactly this mixture of the Italianate and of Viennese sentimentality which makes this discovery so charming!
