Product Information

Northern German Organ Discoveries Vol. 5
Vol. 5 of our journey of discovery through the Northern German organ baroque is dedicated to two rather unknown masters: Melchior Schildt and Peter Morhard. The stations in Schildt’s career are known: Wolfenbüttel, Copenhagen (as court organist to King Christian IV), and then Hanover to the end of his life. During his lifetime he was highly regarded as a famous organ virtuoso whose compelling expressive power and originality had an enduring impact. In 1732 Johann Gottfried Walther reported, »He could play, as he liked, so that one had to laugh or cry.« Schildt was also a man of robust temperament. As tradition has it, he became involved in a fistfight with the organ builder Fritzsche when the building of the new Wölfenbüttel organ did not progress as swiftly as he would have liked. Very little biographical information about Peter Morhard (or Mohrhart), the organist at St. Michael’s Church in Lüneburg from 1662 until his death in 1685, is available. The compositions recorded here are the only known organ works by him that have been transmitted to us. Our surround recording was produced at the wonderful, outstandingly restored Dornum organ (1711) by Gerhard von Holy.
