Klaviermusik von Ignaz Brül

l 1860 debütierte der aus dem heutigen Tschechien stammende Ignaz Brüll erfolgreich als Pianist in Wien, gab aber später diese Karriere zugunsten des Komponierens auf. Leider ist Brüll heute, wenn überhaupt, allenfalls noch als Opernkomponist bekannt ("Das goldene Kreuz"). Als Pädagoge wirkte er zwischen 1872 und 1878 an den Horakschen Klavierschulen, wohin er 1881 als künstlerischer Direktor berufen wird. Mit Brahms verband ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft und seine Verbindung zum Wiener Brahms-Kreis gab übrigens den Impuls zu vorliegender CD, denn dazu äußerte Pianistin Alexandra Oehler: „Brüll ist mir als enger Brahms-Freund im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes in die Hände gefallen. Nach Sichtung des Notenmaterials fand ich den Komponisten sehr interessant. Besonders die Albumblätter erinnerten mich sofort an Schumann. Mein Ansinnen ist es, einen Querschnitt von Brülls Klavierwerk darzustellen – mit Werken, von denen ich überzeugt bin, dass sie hörenswert sind. Auch Brülls Auseinandersetzung mit barocken Formen, versetzt in die Romantik, reizte mich dabei.“

Piano Music by Ignaz Bruell
Ignaz Bruell was born in what is today’s Czech Republic, successfully debuted as a pianist in Vienna in 1860, and later abandoned this career in order to compose. Unfortunately, Bruell is known to us today (if at all) only as the composer of the opera Das goldene Kreuz. He worked as a teacher at the Horak Piano School between 1872 and 1878 and was appointed its director in 1881. He was a lifelong friend of Brahms, and it was his connection with the Brahms circle in Vienna that inspired the present CD. As the pianist Alexandra Oehler states, »Bruell came into my hands as a close friend of Brahms in the truest sense of the word. After sifting through the musical material, I found the composer very interesting. The Albumblaetter in particular immediately recalled Schumann. My intention is to present a cross section of Bruell’s piano oeuvre – with works that I am convinced are worth hearing. Bruell’s occupation with baroque forms, transported into romanticism, is what fascinated me.«
