Obwohl Alessandro Melani sicher zu den am meisten unterschätzten Komponisten des 17. Jahrhunderts und zu den am wenigsten kommentierten gehört, gelang ihm doch vor Mozart die beste Vertonung des "Don Giovanni"-Stoffs mit „L’empio punito“ von 1669. Sonst ist tatsächlich kaum etwas über ihn bekannt. 1639 in Pistoia in eine Familie von Musikern geboren, ist er spätestens1667 als Kapellmeister an der Basilika S. Maria Maggiore in Rom nachweisbar. 1672 wechselt er nach S. Luigi dei Francese, wo er bis zu seinem Tod arbeitet. Die Kirchenmusik ist also seine Domäne, und dennoch schreibt er regelmäßig große Opern, durch die er berühmt wird. Seine »Mini-Oper« „Europa“ ist eine „Festa teatrale“ rund um die Phönizierin, die sich ihrem Entführer hingibt, dem Gott in Stiergestalt, und so das Abendland begründet. Die Musik kommt so frisch, so intelligent, so theatralisch daher, dass man ihm einen ersten Platz in der Reihe der Komponisten zwischen Cavalli, Cesti und Scarlatti einräumen muss. Ausgewählte geistliche Werke runden das Porträt ab, das Hermann Max in gewohnt meisterlicher Weise von diesem nahezu Vergessenen erstellt.

Although Alessandro Melani certainly numbers among the most underrated and most infrequently studied composers of the seventeenth century, it was he who produced the best setting of the Don Giovanni subject prior to Mozart with his L’empio punito of 1669. Hardly anything else about him is known for certain. Born to a family of musicians in Pistoia in 1639, he is attested as music director at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome in 1667 at the very latest. In 1672 he moved on to San Luigi dei Francese, where he continued to serve until his death. Church music was thus his domain, but he also regularly wrote great operas that made him famous. His »mini-opera« L’Europa is a »festa teatrale« focusing on the Phoenician maiden who surrendered to her abductor, Jupiter in bovine guise, and thus founded Western civilization. The music is conveyed with such freshness, intelligence, and dramatic vividness that we have to assign Melani a first place in the ranks of composers between Cavalli, Cesti, and Scarlatti. Selected sacred compositions round off our portrait of this almost entirely forgotten composer unveiled by Hermann Max with the mastery we have come to associate with his name.
