Die Epoche von William Shakespeare (1564-1616) war nicht nur eine Ära für großes Theater. Sie war auch ein Zeitalter musikalischer Hochblüte – die Zeit der Straßen-Balladen, der Lauten-Lieder, der Consort-Musik und Madrigale. Das Album The Sound of Shakespeare vereint all dies auf drei CDs – zum 400. Todestag des größten Dramatikers aller Zeiten. Ein wahrer Schatz sind die Lieder und Lautenstücke von Shakespeare's Lutenist, dem Hoflautenisten Robert Johnson – hier mit der »Queen der Ancient Music« Emma Kirkby und Anthony Rooley. Das berühmte Hilliard-Ensemble ist mit Madrigalen von Dowland und Byrd vertreten – einer Gattung, die damals ihre größte Blüte erlebte (CD 3).
