Christoph Eschenbach became music director of the Houston Symphony, which recently celebrated its eighty-third anniversary, in September, 1988. Beginning with the 1998-99 season, he will become music director of the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, succeeding Herbert Blomstedt.
The music of Christopher Rouse (b. 1949) reflects a diverse musical tradition, embodying his interest in the growth and development of rock and roll, his Celtic cultural heritage, and his training under teachers such as George Crumb, Karel Husa, and Richard Hoffman. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1993, many of his compositions are written in response to tragic events in human existence, such as Phaethon (1986), which is dedicated to the memory of the space shuttle Challenger astronauts.
Flutist Carol Wincenc, winner of the First Prize in the Walter W. Naumburg Solo Flute Competition, is deeply committed to expanding the flute repertoire. She premiered the Rouse concerto, as well as works by Joan Tower, Lukas Foss, and Henryk Gorecki. She is currently a member of the faculty of the Juilliard School in New York.

Rezensionen
