Das Textbuch folgt im Wesentlichen den Kapiteln 18 und 19 des Johannes-Evangeliums. Als Grundlage diente dabei die legendäre Aufnahme des Bach-Dirigenten Karl Richter mit dem Münchner Bach-Chor und -Orchester aus dem Jahr 1964.
