Doppelt gefeierter Friedensschluss
Am 11. April 1713 wurde mit dem Frieden von Utrecht der spanische Erbfolgekrieg beendet, der sich von einem Streit zwischen den Häusern Habsburg und Bourbon zu einer schweren europäischen Krise ausgeweitet hatte. Grund genug, um bei dem 27jährigen Georg Friedrich Händel, der sich gerade in London niedergelassen hatte, schon im Vorfeld ein festliches Te Deum nebst Jubilate zu bestellen; er führte die Stücke am 7. Juli 1713 mit der Chapel Royal in der St.-Pauls-Kathedrale auf. Kaum eine Woche später erklang bei einer Feier zum Frieden von Utrecht in Oxford die Ode With Noise of Cannon von William Croft, der Händels Kollege bei der Chapel Royal war.
