Thomas Tomkins wurde 1572 in einer Musikerfamilie in Wales geboren und wurde im 17. Jahrhundert zu einem der bedeutendsten Kirchenmusiker in England. In seinen reifen Jahren teilte er seine Zeit zwischen seinen Aufgaben als Chormeister an der Kathedrale von Worcester und als Organist der King's Chapel in London auf und galt als einer der herausragenden Organisten seiner Zeit. Seine Madrigale waren die wichtigsten in der englischen Kompositionsschule, und zu seinem beachtlichen Werk gehörten über 120 Hymnen, von denen viele seiner herausragenden Werke auf dieser CD mit Tomkins' Höhepunkten zu finden sind.
