Von Beginn seiner Karriere an war die Musik für gemischtes Ensemble ein Bestandteil im Werk des Komponisten Peter Maxwell Davies. Dabei hat er stets Gebrauch von unterschiedlichen Stilistiken gemacht, die – wie bei Fantasie on a Ground and Two Pavans mit ihrem fast provokativen Anklang an Purcell – einige Jahrhunderte in der Musikgeschichte zurückliegen können. Das jüngste Stück auf der vorliegenden CD, Linguae Ignis, wurde 2002 von den Künstlern dieser Aufnahme uraufgeführt. Maxwell Davies verflicht hier zwei Pfingstgesänge miteinander, die sich dann stufenweise zu Tanzstrukturen entwickeln, worauf das Solo-Cello wortgewandt antwortet.
