Karajans Aufnahme ist ein schöner Sonderfall der Mussorgsky-Darstellung, ästhetisch vollendet, klanglich fabelhaft, aber im Charakter eher mitteleuropäisch als russisch. Alles in allem ist hier eine sehr wertvolle Platte entstanden, die auch aufnahme- technisch auf hohem Niveau steht und den typisch grammophonalen Verschmelzungsklang in überzeugender Form bietet."
