Der portugiesische Komponist Joly Braga Santos hat viele Gattungen mit Werken bedacht. Die vorliegende Auswahl seiner Musik gibt einen beeindruckenden Querschnitt seines Schaffens wider. Braga Santos ist ein bedeutender Komponist, nicht nur in und für Portugal, sondern durch seine Ausdruckskraft und Vielseitigkeit ist er weit über den nationalen Radius hinaus interessant. Seine Musik wird bei weitem nicht oft genug auf CD verfügbar gemacht. Elegy entstand für seinen Landsmann, den Pianisten Vianna da Motta. In der Symphonic Overture Nr. 3 verwendet Braga Santos höchst eigenständiges folkloristisches Material. Three Symphonic Sketches bieten saftige Klänge, aufgeladen mit treibenden Rhythmen. Die Variations for Orchestra sind Ausdruck einer kompositorischen Umorientierung, zwar subtil, aber deutlich nachzuvollziehen, bei Alfama handelt es sich um eine entzückende Ballettmusik.
