Im Jahr 1896 veröffentlichte der englische Autor Alfred Edward Housman auf eigene Kosten A Shropshire Lad, einen 63 Gedichte umfassenden Zyklus. Housmans Landsmann George Butterworth hat 11 Gedichte dieser überaus erfolgreichen Sammlung in zwei Folgen vertont. Die ersten Six Songs erschienen 1911, ein Jahr später folgte mit Bredon Hill and Other Songs der Rest. Die nostalgischen Gedichte gewinnen durch Butterworths Vertonung eine Melancholie, die vor dem Hintergrund seines frühen Todes in der Schlacht von Somme im Jahre 1916, umso schmerzlicher zu sein scheint.
