Händel komponierte den Alessandro (Alexander the Great, HWV21)1726 für die Royal Academy of Music. Das dem Komponisten zur Verfügung stehende außergewöhnliche Sängerensemble hatte großen Einfluss auf die Struktur der Oper: die Verteilung der Arien und den gleichberechtigten Solorollen ist mit Bedacht vorgenommen, so dass die damaligen "Stars" wie ein Senesino, eine Francensca Cuzzoni und Faustina Bordoni gleichermaßen zur Geltung kommen.
