Erkel war ein musikalischer Nationalheld – Komponist der ungarischen Nationalhymne, Begründer und erster Direktor der Budapester Oper (an der ihm später Gustav Mahler nachfolgen sollte). Auf ihn gehen insgesamt neun Opern zurück, die den Rossini-Stil mit der ungarischen Volkstanz-Musik vermengen. Von diesen werden heute nur noch „Hunyadi László“ und vor allem „Bánk bán“ aufgeführt. Den dauerhaftesten Erfolg erzielte Erkel aber mit der Melodie der ungarischen Nationalhymne (Himnusz). Die Nationalhymne sowie die erste und zweite Königshymne und die Ungarische Kantate sind denn auch Schwerpunkte dieses Programms.
