Um 1730 begann der sogenannte „galante“ Stil seinen Siegeszug durch Europa. Typisch sind die Zurückdrängung des Kontrapunkts, eine Vorliebe für zarte, oft aber auch bukolische Melodien, leichte Tanzrhythmen. Das alles fließt leicht dahin, ganz anders als im gravitätischen und prächtigen Barock. In Norddeutschland entwickelte sich der galante Stil allerdings anders als in Frankreich und Italien; hier übernahm man doch aus dem Barock das eine oder andere Stilelement und schuf so Mischformen, sozusagen Bach light. In diesem Kontext sind Johann Gottlieb Graun, Johann Christoph Graupner und Johann Friedrich Fasch zu sehen und zu beurteilen.
