Vivaldi selbst war zwar Geiger, und so ist zu vermuten, dass die ersten von ihm komponierten Solokonzerte Violinkonzerte gewesen sein dürften; die frühesten erhaltenen Manuskripte von der Hand des prete rosso sind indessen Cellokonzerte: Franz Horneck, ein deutscher Musiker, der sich im Winter 1708 / 09 in Venedig aufhielt, hat die Partituren erworben, und wie durch ein Wunder sind sie erhalten geblieben.
