Asturias in north-western Spain is a land of dramatic contrasts with an ancient cultural heritage. Award-winning Spanish composer Antón García Abril and writer José León Delestal drew from the rich folklore of this region for their evocative song cycle Madre Asturias. Originally scored for orchestra, these fourteen songs are here performed with piano, heightening the intimate relationship between the voice of Asturian lyrical tenor Joaquín Pixán and Spanish pianist Rosa Torres-Pardo.
