Shostakovich's Piano Trio no. 1 (op. 8) shows a sure grasp of form and a confidence of argument that are astonishing from the pen of an adolescent, then still a student at the Leningrad Conservatory. More striking still than the quality of the craftsmanship is the fact that the artist's personality here asserts itself with its full force. The Trio op. 67 is very close in mood to Aaron Copland's Vitebsk Trio, which similarly makes use of a Jewish theme to express despair and tragedy.

This title was released for the first time in 2004.
