Willem-Jan Zwanenburg: Degradation Processes of Railway Switches
Blurb
Approximately 25 percent of the budget for themaintenance and renewal of railway tracks -inSwitzerland more than a billion Swiss Franks- is usedfor the switches (a. k.a. points or turnouts) andcrossings (S&C). While in the mean time the budgetexpenditure for the maintenance and renewal of plaintrack is optimized with e. g. the help of decisionsupport systems, for S&C this optimisation staysrather rudimentary. One of the identified causesthereof is the lack of insight in the degradation anddeterioration process of S&C. This study therefore combined several databases ofthe Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). Statisticalanalyses are carried out on them to retrieve thelifetime of expectancy of completerailway S&C and their respective components, e. g.point rails, stock rails, frog. The expectedlifetimes are attributed to different parameterswhich influence the speed of geometrical degradationor wear of the material, e. g. total train loads(expressed in cumulative tonnages), axle loads, themain direction of the trains, the speed and thequality of the foundation.
