The work has been adapted twice into film, once in 1946 and again in 1978. The story is set in Los Angeles, California. The story is noted for its complexity, with many characters double-crossing each other and many secrets being exposed throughout the narrative. The title is a euphemism for death; it refers to a rumination in the book about "sleeping the big sleep".

Biografie

Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) begann seine Schriftstellerlaufbahn 1908 in London als "Dichter", entschloß sich dann aber, lieber ein guter Krimi- und Drehbuchautor in Hollywood als ein mittelmäßiger Poet zu werden. In seinen "detective stories" und Kriminalromanen setzte Chandler durch sein hochentwickeltes Formbewußtsein und das beständige Feilen an Stil, Dialog und Charakterzeichnung Maßstäbe. So formte sich bei ihm, in seiner sarkastisch-pointierten Schreibweise, der Krimiplot zu einem kritischen Gesellschaftsbild Amerikas in den 30er Jahren.
